## Summary

De herfstnamiddag ging in avond over. De lucht was bewolkt geweest, maar de wolken hadden zich van lieverlede in een donkerblauw opgelost. De zee was zoo stil alsof zij sliep, doch in haar slaap rees zij met den wassenden vloed. Het oog kon dat langzamerhand wassen niet opmerken, maar Beatrice, die op het uiterste punt van de _Dog Rocks_ stond, zag het lange, bruine zeewier aan den kant der rotsen allengs onder de groene golven verdwijnen. Inmiddels had zich een dichte nevel over het stille water verspreid. Hij was niet uit het westen aangewaaid, hij kwam eenvoudig als de schemering, maakte de stilte nog stiller, en deed de omtrekken van het land ineensmelten. Beatrice zag niet meer naar...
